This week, House Democrats raised serious concerns about the use of AI tools by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a cost-cutting initiative with ties to Elon Musk. They’ve issued letters to 24 federal agencies demanding transparency and immediate reassurances that sensitive data isn’t being funneled into unapproved, potentially insecure AI systems.

The controversy centers on allegations that DOGE is employing commercial AI models to analyze agency operations, staff allocations, and even financial data. The problem? According to Representative Gerald Connolly (D-VA), the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, there’s little evidence these tools have undergone the stringent security and privacy reviews mandated by federal law.

“Federal agencies are bound by multiple statutory requirements in their use of AI software,” Connolly emphasized. Among them are the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), the Privacy Act of 1974, and the E-Government Act of 2002. Connolly warns that bypassing these protocols could result in severe privacy breaches and a fundamental failure to protect the cybersecurity of federal systems.

One of the most explosive claims in Connolly’s letters is that the DOGE team may have relied on AI-generated recommendations to propose staffing cuts across agencies—decisions potentially informed by unvetted algorithms. Even more concerning, there’s speculation that Musk’s AI model, Grok, could be using data siphoned from federal databases to refine its capabilities, though no direct evidence has yet surfaced to support this theory.

The watchdog group Cyberintelligence Brief added fuel to the fire by alleging that Inventry.ai, a machine learning platform possibly used by DOGE, is actively ingesting government data. They claim multiple US government IP addresses point directly to Inventry.ai’s REST API—despite the company lacking FedRAMP approval. If true, this would mark a significant breach of established cybersecurity practices.

Connolly’s letter paints a picture of reckless AI deployment. “These actions demonstrate blatant disregard for data privacy,” he wrote, calling it a severe failure in safeguarding federal systems. Of particular concern is the US Department of Education (ED), where AI tools allegedly accessed sensitive information, including student loan borrower data, employee details, and financial records.

“I am deeply concerned that borrowers’ sensitive information is being handled by secretive members of the DOGE team for unclear purposes and with no safeguards,” Connolly stated. If the allegations are true, it could expose millions of Americans to potential data misuse, identity theft, or worse.

The implications go beyond privacy. Cybersecurity experts warn that entrusting unapproved AI systems with sensitive data could create vulnerabilities ripe for exploitation. AI systems are only as secure as their underlying frameworks, and if those frameworks are opaque or lack proper oversight, federal data could be exposed to malicious actors or foreign adversaries.

As of now, most of the 24 federal agencies contacted by Connolly remain tight-lipped. While some acknowledged receiving the letter, they declined to comment on DOGE’s AI deployments or data handling practices. The silence only deepens public uncertainty about how AI is being integrated into government workflows.

Connolly’s letter demands a comprehensive response by March 26. Lawmakers are seeking full disclosure on AI tools in use, including their names, versions, training data, and purposes. They also want detailed records of risk assessments, privacy protections, and the legal authority underpinning DOGE’s access to government information.

This issue strikes at the heart of a much larger debate: how should governments harness AI’s potential without compromising security, privacy, or public trust? Musk’s DOGE program was initially lauded for its promise to streamline bloated government processes, but critics now worry that the pursuit of efficiency may come at too high a price.

Meanwhile, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling for greater AI accountability. A small bipartisan coalition, including Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), is urging international allies to resist weakening encryption standards in the name of surveillance—another front in the ongoing battle between security and privacy in the digital age.

As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly powerful tool, the US government faces a critical test: can it strike a balance between innovation and integrity? The next few weeks may offer some answers, but for now, the questions loom large.
